Second Valley House

Second Valley House

Rolling hills forming a valley down to the sea has strongly determined the form of this bold but graceful rural house.

A gently curving roof echoes the shape of the valley. Beautifully laid stone salvaged from the area reinforces the image of a structure carefully designed as a timeless & appropriate addition to a unique setting.

The upward curving roof & ceiling of the lounge focus on the grand stone fire place & hills beyond.

North facing windows to the living area open out to a timber deck & the view down the valley to the sea. An entrance courtyard serves an alternative but more sheltered outdoor area.

By maximising the capture of winter sun through north facing windows to living areas and bedrooms & by allowing cross ventilation of the narrow linear form to provide summer cooling, energy usage is minimised.

Rainwater is harvested for use throughout the house.
